Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI's world is twice the size of GTA 5's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, according to an interview head of development Rob Nelson gave to YouTuber TGG (Eurogamer, 27 August 2026).

The numbers get more striking when you zoom in on the cities. Vice City alone in GTA 6 is twice the size of Los Santos, GTA 5's fictional Los Angeles. Add Vice City's surrounding suburbs and the area balloons to 11 times the size of Los Santos and its surrounds combined (Eurogamer, 27 August 2026).

GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a Florida-inspired state, and Rockstar has named six key locations spread across it: Vice City itself, Port Gellhorn, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers swamps, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Ambrosia. That range — from neon city to swamp to national park — points to the kind of environmental variety the studio is building into the playable space.

Nelson also told the New York Times that his most recent playthrough of the game in February took roughly 80 hours, covering the main story and some optional objectives that carry narrative consequences. Eighty hours is not a final figure for players at large, but it is the closest thing to a concrete length anyone at Rockstar has put on the record.

Players will get a longer look at the game today. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a special produced for Netflix, premieres on 27 August at 3 p.m. ET on both Netflix and Rockstar's official channel (Rockstar Newswire, 6 August 2026). It is a notable platform choice — a gaming publisher choosing a streaming service best known for film and television for a major reveal.

GTA 6 is now set to launch on 19 November, a date that followed a second public delay and sent parent company Take-Two Interactive's shares 6% lower on the day it was announced (Reuters, 7 November 2025). Rockstar has not framed the delays as anything other than production decisions, and the developer's pattern has been to share information in measured doses — map sizes and playtime figures now, a Netflix special today, and the game itself in November.

For fans of the series, the map confirmation settles one of the most persistent questions since the first trailer dropped. GTA 5's world was already vast at release in 2013, and Red Dead Redemption 2's open landscape set a benchmark in 2018. GTA 6 is being built to outscale both, and the 80-hour playthrough figure suggests the content inside that space aims to match.
