Backpack Paragliders for British Special Forces: What the MoD's £6 Million Contract Means

The Ministry of Defence has awarded a £6 million contract for backpack-sized powered paragliders designed to insert British special forces troops up to 200 miles behind enemy lines, with trials set to begin in the coming months (BBC News).
The MoD announced the system in a news release on gov.uk on 28 August 2026, describing rucksack-sized powered paragliders that could give British troops an innovative means of conducting covert missions in hostile territory (gov.uk). The BBC reported the same day that the paragliders are intended primarily for Royal Marine and Parachute Regiment personnel, allowing them to fly into hostile areas at night rather than dropping from aircraft (BBC News).
The manufacturer, Blakcro, is based in Wiltshire and was founded in 2023. It employs 11 people and has already received UK government support for two other projects. The company also works with the US Department of Defense. Blakcro says the titanium-framed paragliders can be assembled in eight minutes and launched on foot by a pilot wearing the system as a backpack. A fan provides forward thrust once the canopy — the parachute-like wing — is inflated (BBC News).
The system's stated appeal is stealth. Blakcro says the paragliders are harder to detect by radar or sound than traditional aircraft, allowing pilots to enter hostile territory covertly. Each machine can carry body armour, night vision equipment and weapon mounts alongside the operator. The company says the paragliders have a range of up to 200 miles. The technology is already in use with other NATO member countries, according to the BBC (BBC News).
Defence Minister Luke Pollard framed the purchase within the government's wider industrial strategy. Pollard said the government was "building a more resilient, homegrown defence supply chain" and ensuring armed forces receive "pioneering equipment" (BBC News).
A UK government spokesperson said the prime minister and chancellor are committed to fully funding the defence investment plan and will set out a pathway to meet the NATO commitment of 3.5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2035, including a target date to hit 3 per cent (BBC News).
The broader context here is that the paraglider contract is modest in cash terms, but it offers an early test case for two stated government priorities: equipping light forces for dispersed, low-signature operations, and channelling defence spending into small UK-based manufacturers rather than the large established defence firms (often called "primes").
The choice of platform also reflects a shift in how Western militaries are thinking about getting troops into hostile areas. Traditional airborne delivery, whether by parachute from fixed-wing aircraft or by helicopter, generates acoustic and radar signatures that modern air-defence systems can detect and engage. A foot-launched powered paraglider trades speed and payload for a dramatically lower detection profile — think of it as choosing a bicycle over a motorbike if your goal is to arrive without being heard. The 200-mile range would allow operators to launch well outside the coverage area of most theatre-level air-defence networks, meaning the defensive radar and missile systems that protect a broad operational zone.
For elite light infantry, the appeal is flexibility. Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment troops routinely train for small-team, deep-penetration missions where the ability to arrive undetected, conduct reconnaissance or direct action, and then withdraw can determine whether an operation succeeds. A system that can be carried in a rucksack, assembled in minutes, and launched from an unprepared field site reduces dependence on dedicated aircraft and on the runway or deck space those aircraft require.
The fact that the technology is already fielded by other NATO members is worth noting. It suggests the UK is not entering uncharted operational territory but is instead catching up with allies who have already validated the concept. Blakcro's existing relationship with the US Department of Defense indicates that interoperability and information-sharing on the platform may already be established through allied channels.
The contract also fits the pattern of recent UK defence procurement, which has placed increasing emphasis on unmanned and low-cost systems that can be developed and fielded on shorter timelines than major platforms. A company of 11 people delivering a £6 million contract within a programme that has already received government support for two other projects is a signal that the MoD is willing to act as an early customer for emerging suppliers, not only as a buyer of systems from established contractors.
What the coming trials will determine is whether the paragliders perform under realistic operational conditions. The tests will show whether the advertised capabilities, including the 200-mile range and the eight-minute assembly time, hold up under the conditions that Royal Marine and Parachute Regiment personnel would actually face. Until those trials report, the system is a promising concept backed by a clear intention, not a proven capability.
