Jake Reiner Speaks Out for First Time Since the Killing of His Parents, Rob and Michele Reiner
Jake Reiner has given his first interview since his parents, the film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home last December. "I will never understand why this happened," he said, in remarks published by The Guardian on 28 August 2026.
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found with apparent stab wounds at their home in the Brentwood neighbourhood on 14 December 2025, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty in August 2026. Prosecutors added a special-circumstance allegation that Nick was lying in wait before the killings. A grand jury indictment was unsealed on 12 August 2026.
Nick Reiner could face the death penalty if convicted, though Los Angeles prosecutors told NPR they have not yet decided whether to seek it. His pretrial hearing is scheduled for 15 September 2026.
Jake Reiner, 35, described learning of the killings when his younger sister Romy, 28, called 911 from across the street, where she lived. She told him: "our dad was dead" and "I can't find mom." Romy had discovered their father's body.
Jake said he has lost nearly everyone in his family. His parents are dead. His brother is in jail. Only Romy remains. "I will never understand why this happened," he told The Guardian. He said his parents had unconditional love for all three of their children and "never stopped helping" Nick through his reported struggles with addiction and mental health.
Those struggles were well known within the family. The 2015 film Being Charlie, written by Nick Reiner and directed by his father, was loosely based on Nick's life. Rob Reiner had spoken openly about his son's addiction issues in interviews surrounding the film's release.
Jake had not spoken publicly in detail before this interview, though in April 2026 he wrote a Substack essay calling the situation "almost too impossible to process" and "my living nightmare." In an earlier Guardian interview published 24 April 2026, he called his parents the "center" of his life and said his brother being at the "center" of the loss was nearly impossible to bear.
He has not spoken with Nick since the killings and declined to say whether he would want to. Nick Reiner attempted to access $1.6 million held in a trust his parents had set up for him as a child, intending to use it for legal fees. The trust's professional fiduciary and trustees blocked the attempt, citing California's slayer statute — a law that bars a person from inheriting or profiting from the estate of someone they are accused of killing.
Rob Reiner was among the most recognisable figures in American film: director of When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride, and Stand by Me, and an actor who rose to fame as Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the television series All in the Family. Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and producer. The couple's children, Jake and Romy, issued a joint statement in December 2025 calling the deaths of their parents "horrific and devastating."
The case now moves toward a pretrial hearing in September, with the question of whether prosecutors will pursue the death penalty still unanswered.
