Nick Reiner will not face death penalty in parents' murder case, DA says
Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is charged with killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday morning, 15 September 2026, according to local coverage. The announcement was reported by Deadline and confirmed in reports from KTLA and the Los Angeles Times.
Reiner faces two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders. That allegation, meaning prosecutors allege more than one murder was committed in the same case, had previously made the case eligible for capital punishment under California law.
If convicted, the maximum sentence he now faces is life in state prison without the possibility of parole. That point was confirmed by the District Attorney’s office in its account of the decision.
At earlier stages, the potential punishment was broader. When Reiner was charged in December 2025 and later indicted in August 2026, the District Attorney’s Office said in press releases that a conviction as charged could carry death or life without parole. Those statements were published by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Hochman said he consulted with senior prosecutors in his office before reaching the decision, NBC News reported. The office also said it took into consideration the views of Jake Reiner, Romy Reiner and Tracy Reiner.
The decision removes the ultimate punishment from the case. It does not resolve the charges. The murder case will still proceed toward trial.
The New York Post reported that prosecutors weighed the decision in part because of the views of Rob and Michele Reiner themselves, citing their known opposition to capital punishment. That account was carried in the New York Post.
The underlying allegation dates to December 2025. Prosecutors said Reiner was charged with fatally stabbing his parents in their Brentwood home, as set out in a December 2025 press release from the District Attorney’s Office. He was later indicted on the murder charges in August 2026.
Reiner turned 33 on Monday, 14 September, the day before the announcement.
