Grand Theft Auto VI is currently running at 30 frames per second, and Rockstar Games has not decided whether it will offer a smoother 60 FPS option — either at launch or later.

A GTA 6 director told Brazilian outlet Flow Games that the game's technical team still needs to be consulted before the studio can confirm whether a higher frame-rate mode will be available, according to Eurogamer. The director said he currently has no details on resolution or other visual features such as ray tracing (a lighting technique that simulates how light bounces in real time). For now, the target is 30 FPS.

Frame rate — the number of distinct images a game displays each second — directly affects how fluid motion looks. Thirty FPS is standard for many large open-world games on current consoles. Sixty FPS makes movement feel notably smoother and more responsive, which some players prefer, though it often comes at the cost of visual fidelity.

Rockstar is reportedly undecided about adding a 60 FPS performance mode to improve on the 30 FPS target, GamesRadar reported. The studio has not publicly committed either way.

The news follows GTA 6's extended-look trailer, which Rockstar confirmed was captured on a base PlayStation 5 — not the more powerful PS5 Pro. Some viewers noted that the trailer's motion looked noticeably low, Eurogamer reported.

Rockstar's official GTA VI page states the game "plays best on PlayStation 5," a marketing line that reflects a platform partnership but does not specify technical targets like resolution or frame rate.

Technical analysts have already cast doubt on whether 60 FPS is realistic for a game of this scope. Digital Foundry, a respected games-technology analysis outlet, predicted in late June that GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS across consoles and that even the PS5 Pro would struggle to reach 60 FPS, describing the higher target as "a bridge too far," IGN reported.

That assessment is not a final verdict. Rockstar has a track record of squeezing remarkable results out of console hardware, and the studio's own technical team has not yet weighed in with a decision. What players can count on for now: 30 FPS is the baseline, and everything beyond that is still under discussion.

GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida — a fictional take on Florida — and centres on a pair of protagonists, Lucia and Jason. It is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A firm launch date has not been announced.
