GTA 6 Is the Most Impressive Real-Time Rendering Digital Foundry Has Ever Seen — and It's Locked to 30fps

Digital Foundry analysts Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter have published an extended analysis of the Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay reveal, calling it the most impressive example of real-time game rendering they have ever seen. The team analysed all 48,242 frames of the "Extended Look" footage Rockstar supplied to Netflix, YouTube and its own site. That footage is mastered as a 30-frame-per-second video asset — meaning it plays back at 30 images per second rather than the smoother 60 that many current-generation console games offer. Frame rate is the number of images a game draws per second; higher counts mean smoother motion. For context, most modern console titles offer a 60fps "performance mode" that trades visual richness for fluidity. Digital Foundry does not expect Rockstar to ship a 60fps mode for GTA 6 on current-generation consoles — the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and the upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro — even with significant visual compromises. The CPU, not the graphics hardware, is the biggest bottleneck to cutting rendering time in half. The team suggests 60fps becomes viable only when next-generation hardware like the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix arrive.
The preview rendered at a native 1440p resolution (2560×1440 pixels) and was upscaled to 4K without using modern upscaling techniques — the AI-driven tools like Nvidia's DLSS or AMD's FSR that reconstruct lower-resolution images into sharper ones. Rockstar appears to have invested heavily in maturing its traditional shadow-map technology rather than leaning exclusively on ray tracing, a technique that simulates how light bounces in the real world but is computationally expensive.
Where ray tracing is used, it is deployed surgically. Digital Foundry noted that in certain close-up shots, shadow fidelity rises to a level suggesting limited, cutscene-specific ray-traced shadows — applied precisely rather than across the whole scene. Sun shadows and most local shadows remain based on refined shadow maps, with improved softening that tightens near the object casting the shadow and diffuses with distance.
The character work drew particular praise. Hair simulation covers straight, wavy and curly textures with proper light transport and secondary motion. Lucia, one of the game's two protagonists, has hair that behaves convincingly in both cutscenes and gameplay — base-to-tip movement, delayed follow-through and realistic snap-back. Skin shading uses a semi-stylised look with realistic highlights for sweat and make-up, and bodies in hot, humid environments look slick in a way real-time rendering rarely achieves.
For players, the trade-offs land in image quality and animation smoothness rather than in the scale or detail of the world itself. Digital Foundry concluded that at launch, GTA 6 will be the most performant entry in the series' 3D history — Rockstar has consistently pushed visual fidelity ahead of frame rate, as it did with Grand Theft Auto 5 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to reports from people who spoke to Rockstar, the developer has said higher frame-rate modes will be considered for post-launch updates, with the launch focus on maximising visual detail at a fixed 30fps across all platforms.
