Kirill Sokolov to Direct Animated Feature 'Alone in the Ocean,' Based on a Soviet Oceanographer's Daring 1974 Escape

Kirill Sokolov will direct his first animated feature, Alone in the Ocean, based on the true story of Slava Kurilov, a Soviet oceanographer who escaped the U.S.S.R. by jumping off a cruise ship into the Pacific Ocean and swimming for nearly three days before reaching land (Variety).

The film is backed by production companies Lazy Sunday and The Media Company. Artem Vasilyev of Lazy Sunday produces alongside Roman Borisevich and Didier Lupfer of The Media Company, with Alan Keane serving as creative producer. Roman Sokolov, Kirill's collaborator, will be art director.

The story behind the film is remarkable on its own. In December 1974, Kurilov bought a ticket for a 20-day Soviet cruise departing from Vladivostok, heading toward the equator and back. Because the ship was not scheduled to dock at any foreign ports, passengers did not need exit visas — the document the Soviet government required for citizens to leave the country. For Kurilov, a trained oceanographer and experienced diver, the cruise was an opportunity.

As the ship passed near the Philippines, Kurilov jumped overboard into the Pacific. He spent nearly three days swimming alone before reaching the Philippine island of Siargao. Kurilov later wrote about the experience in his autobiographical book Alone in the Ocean, first published in full in 2004. He died in 1998 following a diving accident.

The film adaptation was originally developed as a live-action feature before shifting to animation. The final version will combine live-action footage, motion capture (a technique that records actors' movements and translates them into animated characters), rotoscoping (where animators trace over filmed footage frame by frame), 2D and 3D animation, and water simulation — a hybrid toolkit that reflects the demands of telling a story set almost entirely at sea.

For Sokolov, the project marks a departure into animation. He was recently tapped to direct Blur, an upcoming sci-fi action feature for Netflix, and previously worked with Lazy Sunday on the film No Looking Back. Vasilyev unveiled a production slate in late 2024 that included Alone in the Ocean alongside Sokolov's next feature, signalling the project had been in development for some time before this week's announcement.

The producers are currently in discussions with potential partners across Europe, suggesting the film is being positioned for an international co-production model — a structure where multiple countries share financing and, in return, access to tax incentives, local crews and distribution rights in their territories.
