Netflix has set Kirill Sokolov to direct "Blur," an original sci-fi thriller centering on a mother-daughter story involving teleportation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The logline is otherwise under wraps. What is known: the film builds on a previous script by Christy Hall and Dan Casey, with Sokolov now co-writing a new draft alongside Ellen Shanman. The Hollywood Reporter

Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce through their 21 Laps banner, the production company behind "Stranger Things" and "Arrival." Bryan Oh is overseeing the project for 21 Laps.

Sokolov is a Russian filmmaker who first drew international attention with "Why Don't You Just Die," a dark crime action comedy from 2019. He followed it with another Russian dark action comedy, "No Looking Back," before making the jump to English-language filmmaking with "They Will Kill You." That film — an action-horror-comedy released by Warner Bros. in March 2025 — starred Zazie Beetz and was set in a Manhattan luxury building whose Satan-worshipping tenants carry out ritualistic killings.

The throughline across Sokolov's work is a taste for genre-mashing: action, comedy, horror, and now science fiction, often blended within a single film. "Blur" would mark his first project with Netflix and his first foray into sci-fi. He is represented by CAA, Harvest Hill Entertainment, Kaplan Perrone, and Yorn Levine.
