SCAD Savannah Film Festival Returns for 29th Year With Oscar-Track Films and Industry Panels

The SCAD Savannah Film Festival returns for its 29th edition on October 24, running eight days through October 31 in Savannah, Georgia. One of the largest film festivals in the southeastern United States, the event drew more than 74,000 attendees last year. It is university-led, programmed by the Savannah College of Art and Design, and screens a wide mix of work: competition films, features, documentaries, shorts, and animated selections, alongside panel discussions and workshops. For an audience tracking the awards season — the months-long run of festivals and screenings that build toward the Academy Awards — the festival has become a reliable early stop. Last year it screened 26 films that went on to receive Oscar nominations, including eight of the Best Picture nominees. More than 200 SCAD alumni worked across 21 of the films nominated for Oscars last year, according to Variety. Variety

Several major entertainment publications are bringing their own programming to the festival. Variety returns with two panels: "Artisans to Watch," hosted by Jazz Tangcay, spotlighting below-the-line craft talent, and "Pixels and Pencils," hosted by Clayton Davis. The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg leads the "Docs to Watch" series, which spotlights ten of the year's standout documentaries. Entertainment Weekly hosts a "Breaking Big" panel recognising emerging Hollywood talent, and Deadline returns with its "TV Sidebar" highlighting new television series. Variety

The festival is also a classroom. Master classes, coffee talks, and portfolio reviews put visiting industry professionals in the same rooms as SCAD students from the School of Film and Acting and the School of Animation and Motion Media. Student moderator auditions are set for September 29 at 4 p.m. in Savannah, and volunteer interest meetings are scheduled for October 9 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with inquiries directed to filmfest@scad.edu.
