Bruce Norris' Controversial Play 'Downstate' Heads to Broadway's Booth Theatre This Fall
Bruce Norris' play Downstate — a drama set in a group home for people convicted of sex crimes — is headed to Broadway's Booth Theatre for a limited engagement this fall, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The Tribune broke the news on August 25 in its regular Chicago theater column. Deadline confirmed the report on August 29, adding that the production will be directed by Joe Mantello and produced by Scott Rudin, with original Chicago cast members Francis Guinan and K. Downstate follows four men convicted of sex offenses who have completed their prison sentences but remain on the sex offender registry. They live together in a group home in downstate Illinois. The plot turns when one of the men is confronted by a former student. Norris is a known quantity on Broadway — his play Clybourne Park won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play.
The play has a long history before this Broadway move. It premiered in 2018 at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where Norris is an ensemble member. An Off Broadway production followed in 2022 at Playwrights Horizons, directed by Pam MacKinnon. That staging won the 2023 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play and an Obie Award for Playwriting. The work has also been staged in London's West End and in Washington, D.C.
The material has drawn political heat. Right-wing commentators and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz criticized the play, with Cruz tweeting that corporate media was praising pedophilia. The play's defenders have pointed to its exploration of punishment, rehabilitation, and the registry system — not an endorsement of its characters' crimes.
For Rudin and Mantello, Downstate extends a partnership already running at full tilt. The pair collaborated on a 2026 revival of Death of a Salesman starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, which won the 2026 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. The previous season, Rudin, Mantello, and Metcalf teamed on Samuel D. Hunter's Little Bear Ridge Road.
