Pokémon Unite Bows Out at World Championships as Zeta Division Takes Final Crown
Pokémon Unite made its last stand on the world stage, and Zeta Division stood alone at the end. Zeta Division defeated Komai to win the 2026 Pokémon Unite World Championship, held at Chase Center in San Francisco — the final time the mobile and Switch team-battler will appear at the Pokémon World Championships, according to VGC.
The 2026 Pokémon World Championships ran from August 28 to 30 at the home arena of the NBA's Golden State Warriors, sharing the city with the PokémonXP convention. San Francisco had signalled its Pokémon embrace months earlier, with the Giants hosting a Pokémon Worlds Night at their ballpark on May 28.
Three games, three sets of champions. In Pokémon Go — the augmented-reality mobile game where players catch creatures in real-world locations — GGS489HIROMARU beat Meweedle for the world title. The Trading Card Game, the tabletop card game that started the competitive Pokémon scene, crowned champions across three age divisions: Yuta Arari took the Junior title, Jake Ng won Senior, and Andrew Hendrick claimed the Master division.
The Video Game Championships — VGC, the competitive format built around the main-series Pokémon RPGs — also split into Junior, Senior, and Master divisions. Kazuke Kage won Junior. Vikram Thiagarajan took Senior. Takuma Yamazaki earned the Master crown.
The VGC field brought a wide international mix into the Top 8. Antonio Sánchez of Spain entered as the top seed, with Brazil's João Felipe Leite and the United States' Zachary Weed also reaching the final eight, according to the official Pokémon Worlds coverage. The bracket included notable names from across the season — Paul Chua, described as a VGC Legend, qualified as a TCG competitor, while Pedro Pertusi, the Latin America International Champion in the TCG, also earned a spot.
For Pokémon Unite players and fans, this weekend carried a particular weight. The game, a five-on-five MOBA-style battler — think League of Legends with Pikachu — launched in 2021 and built a competitive scene over five years. Its removal from the World Championships lineup closes the only global stage the game had. The developer and publisher have not stated whether a successor competitive circuit will take its place.
San Francisco's hosting also brought the Pokémon World Championships and the PokémonXP fan convention together in one city for the first time, letting attendees move between the official tournament floor and community events across the three-day weekend.
The full list of 2026 champions, from the card tables to the digital arenas, now sits in the record. Next year's Worlds location has not yet been announced.
