Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Dominates South Korean Box Office for Fourth Straight Weekend
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey held the number-one spot at the South Korean box office for the Aug 28–30, 2026 weekend, its fourth consecutive frame at the top, earning $8.7 million from 1,058,642 admissions across 2,071 screens. That figure gave it a 64.7% share of all weekend business in the market, according to KOBIS data reported by Variety. KOBIS is the box-office tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, or KOFIC.
Since its Aug 5 launch, The Odyssey has accumulated $71.7 million from 8,864,947 total admissions in South Korea (domestic, in this context, refers to the South Korean market rather than the US and Canada). The previous weekend, Aug 21–23, it had earned $10.6 million — a hold that suggests audiences are still buying tickets well into the film's run.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day finished second in its fifth weekend, taking $1.9 million from 250,442 admissions for a 14.4% market share. Its cumulative South Korean gross now stands at $65 million from 8,548,400 admissions. Two blockbusters, both past their opening weekends, still accounted for roughly 79% of all tickets sold.
The local family road-trip drama The Journey to Gyeongju debuted in third place. Directed by Kim Mi-jo and starring Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon, and Byun Yo-han, it follows a grieving mother and her three daughters travelling to Gyeongju to confront the released perpetrator responsible for the death of their youngest family member. It opened to $912,660 from 124,963 admissions across 801 screens, bringing its total since an Aug 26 rollout to $1.3 million from 192,384 admissions.
Fourth place went to The End of Oak Street, which opened to $476,938 from 63,472 admissions. Since its own Aug 26 arrival it has grossed $783,473 from 107,438 admissions. Local animated feature Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone, directed by Kim Soo-hoon, held fifth in its fourth weekend, adding $283,019 from 39,740 admissions to reach a $5.7 million cumulative total from 838,709 viewers. The film follows Princess Romi and Heartsping as they explore an undersea kingdom to rescue Queen Velita.
Horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further took sixth in its sophomore frame with $169,467 from 22,129 admissions, reaching a $1.1 million cume. Japanese anime Detective Conan the Movie: Fallen Angel of the Highway, directed by Takahiro Hasui, landed seventh with $154,613 from 20,686 admissions and a $2.9 million running total.
Local action-comedy sequel Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage, directed by Lee Cheol-ha and starring Uhm Jung-hwa, Park Sung-woong, Lee Sang-yun, and Sooyoung, placed eighth with $80,132 from 10,969 admissions, lifting its total to $2.2 million from 334,907 ticket buyers. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie took ninth with $60,367 from 8,636 admissions, pushing its cumulative to $749,164. Local animated fantasy Ghost Band, directed by Geum Dong-ho — about a singer-songwriter who can see spirits and teams up with a quartet of ghosts to form a musical troupe — rounded out the top 10, opening to $42,077 from 7,961 admissions and a $71,175 cumulative since Aug 26.
The overall South Korean box office grossed $13.5 million across all films for the weekend, down from $16.1 million the previous week.
