Starting September 3, 2026, Philips Hue is letting owners of Nanoleaf Hexagon, Triangle, and Mini Triangle wall panels bring those panels into the Hue ecosystem via a dedicated hardware bridge: the Philips Hue x Nanoleaf Wall Light Module, priced at $39.99. The Verge

The module snaps onto Nanoleaf Shapes panels in the same physical position as Nanoleaf's own controller. Once attached, it converts the panels into full Hue lights, supporting gradient output, Hue scenes, automations, Hue switches, and Hue entertainment experiences. Connectivity runs Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Thread concurrently — meaning the module can talk to the Hue Bridge over the same wireless protocols Hue already uses. On the Bridge Pro, integrated panels also gain access to Hue's MotionAware and Spatial Aware features.

The integration covers only Nanoleaf Shapes products: Hexagon, Triangle, and Mini Triangle. The Nanoleaf Lines, Blocks, and Elements lines are not included.

There is an immediate trade-off. Initially, the Hue module and Nanoleaf's stock controller cannot coexist on the same panel setup. Attaching the Hue module removes access to Nanoleaf's own dynamic scenes, screen mirroring, music-reactive features, and physical controls. Dual-module support is planned for the coming months. Once it arrives, both the Hue and Nanoleaf apps will be usable, with the most recent software command taking priority. During the interim period, Nanoleaf panels can be controlled from within the Hue app, but not the reverse.

Philips Hue and Nanoleaf spent 18 months on the collaboration. They opted for a direct partnership rather than routing through Matter, the cross-vendor smart home standard, because Matter does not yet support the dynamic and entertainment functionality Hue needed. That is a notable technical constraint on the current Matter specification: it handles standard on/off, dimming, and color control across vendors, but the richer lighting choreography that gradient scenes and entertainment sync require falls outside its scope.

Starting October 1, 2026, Nanoleaf Hexagon and Triangle starter kits and extensions will also be sold through philips-hue.com, with prices starting at $49.99.

The corporate backdrop is more tangled than the product announcement suggests. Signify, Philips Hue's parent company, recently sued Nanoleaf over patent infringement. The two companies are now shipping a co-developed product while that litigation is apparently unresolved. The press materials make no mention of the lawsuit, and neither company has publicly addressed how the patent dispute relates to the integration partnership.

This is not the first instance of competitors in the smart lighting space finding themselves simultaneously in court and in partnership. What is unusual here is the directness: the module is a physical hardware artifact co-branded by both companies, requiring the user to snap one onto the other's product.

The timing fits a broader pattern of Hue ecosystem expansion. In March 2025, Philips Hue launched the 8K Play HDMI Sync Box, supporting 4K at 120 Hz for console gaming and syncing up to 10 color-capable Hue lights to on-screen content, alongside an announced partnership with LG. Taken together, the moves suggest Hue is working to consolidate premium lighting entertainment under its own app and bridge infrastructure, whether through first-party hardware, partnerships, or both. The Nanoleaf integration adds a popular third-party decorative lighting product into that funnel without requiring users to abandon their existing panel investment.

For the target user — someone who already runs a Hue Bridge Pro and has Nanoleaf Shapes panels mounted on a wall — the module is a $39.99 bridge between two previously siloed ecosystems. The cost of that bridge, at least initially, is the loss of Nanoleaf's own dynamic and interactive features. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on how much the user values Hue's automations, scenes, and entertainment sync over Nanoleaf's native capabilities. The promised dual-control firmware should eventually eliminate the choice, but no firm date has been given beyond "the next couple of months."

The broader context here is that the decision to bypass Matter in favor of a bilateral integration is pragmatic in the short term but potentially complicating in the long term. Every custom bridge between ecosystems is another proprietary layer that the Matter standard was designed to replace. If Matter eventually extends into dynamic and entertainment lighting, Hue's direct integrations become redundant infrastructure rather than competitive advantage. For now, that future is not here, and Hue has decided not to wait for it.
