HTC is rolling out its Vive Eagle smart glasses across North America, Europe, the UK, and Australia, expanding availability a year after the device's initial Taiwan launch on August 14, 2025 Engadget. It is paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Power comes from a 235mAh battery with a stated standby time of 36 hours. A 12-megapixel front-facing camera handles photo and video capture. On the AI front, HTC lets users select between OpenAI and Gemini models, an unusual degree of provider flexibility for a wearable. The Vive Eagle enters a smart-glasses market that has seen heavy conceptual interest but limited mainstream traction. The Snapdragon AR Gen 1 platform is purpose-built for lightweight AR, and the combination of on-device processing with cloud-based LLM inference via OpenAI or Gemini reflects an architecture where the glasses function as a thin client, offloading the heavy AI work to remote servers rather than running everything locally. The 235mAh battery and 32GB of storage reinforce that framing: this is a device designed for intermittent, voice-driven interactions, not sustained spatial computing.

The choice to offer both OpenAI and Gemini as backend models is worth noting. Most AI wearables to date have locked into a single provider. Letting the user switch between models gives HTC flexibility as the competitive landscape among frontier LLMs shifts, and it avoids betting the product's long-term utility on one API's roadmap and pricing trajectory.

The privacy posture is the more structurally interesting element. The "stop filming" interlock and the wear-detection recording gate are HTC's answer to a problem that has dogged this category since Google Glass. Whether voice-triggered bystander consent proves technically robust enough to satisfy regulators, particularly under EU privacy frameworks, will likely determine whether the Eagle faces the kind of social backlash that stalled earlier camera-glass efforts or finds a more hospitable reception. HTC's commitment not to train on user data and to anonymize requests removes one common objection, but the camera itself remains the flashpoint.

For HTC, the Vive Eagle is a bet that AI-assisted wearables can succeed where earlier camera glasses failed, with cloud LLMs providing the utility that pure capture never could. The $499 entry price puts it in the same bracket as mid-range smartwatches, which is either aggressive or optimistic depending on how much everyday utility the AI features deliver.
