Technoblade's Story Heads to the Big Screen: 'Technoblade Never Dies' Documentary Enters Production
A feature-length documentary about Technoblade, the Minecraft creator who died in 2022 at the age of 23, is now in production with the full support of his family. Titled Technoblade Never Dies — taken from the catchphrase his fans adopted after his death — the film is being produced by Candle Media's Candle True Stories unit, with financing from Riot Games and Hypixel Studios, according to Variety.
Both Riot Games and Hypixel Studios will donate their profits from the film to charity. Hypixel Studios is an independent game studio founded by the team behind Hypixel, the world's biggest Minecraft server — the same creative ecosystem where Technoblade built his audience.
The documentary is directed by Steven Lake, who also produces alongside Max Heckman for Candle True Stories and Robert Ford. James Goldston, the former president of ABC News, serves as executive producer for Candle True Stories.
Technoblade, whose real name was Alex, began creating Minecraft videos as a teenager. His YouTube channel, which now has nearly 23 million subscribers, hit a personal milestone of 10 million subscribers in late 2021 — months before his death. He had revealed his cancer diagnosis that same year and continued speaking openly with fans throughout treatment.
After Technoblade died in June 2022, his father Marshall — known to fans as "Mr. Technodad" — shared a final message his son had written. It ended with the words "so long nerds." The farewell went viral, and in it Marshall revealed Technoblade's first name for the first time.
The grief that followed was measured in extraordinary numbers. More than 400,000 messages from fans were collected in a virtual Minecraft memorial after his death and compiled into 22 books of condolences for the family. The crowned-pig avatar Technoblade used across his channel was later paid tribute in 2025's A Minecraft Movie.
For a sense of scale on the audience involved: Technoblade's community spans one of the largest gaming followings on YouTube, and the documentary enters a landscape where game-inspired content has already crossed into mainstream theatrical release. The producers are planning a path that signals theatrical ambition rather than a quiet streaming drop.
Technoblade Never Dies is just entering production. No release date has been set. Producers plan a major festival premiere, followed by a theatrical release and then broader distribution — a rollout pattern that mirrors how music and sports documentaries have moved from the festival circuit into cinemas in recent years.
