Minecraft is going colder underground. Mojang used its Minecraft Live showcase on 26 September to announce the game's next game drop, a smaller seasonal update, with ice caves and a new enemy called the Frozen Zombie. The update is expected to release in December 2026, according to GameSpot.

Ice caves are the headline addition. They are a rare underground extension of Minecraft's existing cold biomes, the game's term for regions with their own climate, blocks and creatures. Players who find one will spot ice crystals growing inside.

The crystals are collectible and built for builders. They can be placed vertically or horizontally for decoration, and they give off light. That makes them a practical light source as well as a favourite for icy builds.

Then there is the Frozen Zombie. It is a hostile mob, meaning an enemy creature that attacks players on sight. Up close, its melee attacks build a stacking freezing effect that can leave the player frozen in place. At range, it throws ice balls that deal damage and knock players back.

Mojang also explained how the new mob appears. A regular Zombie turns into a Frozen Zombie when exposed to powdered snow, a loose snow block that players and mobs can sink into. It is a simple trigger. Wander into the wrong snowfield, and the familiar night-time enemy comes back harder.

Killing a Frozen Zombie drops ice balls. They can also be crafted, so players do not have to farm the mob for a supply. Once collected, ice balls work in two ways.

They can be thrown as weapons to damage enemies and knock them back. They can also be used to brew a new potion that applies a freezing effect. Mojang has not yet detailed the full brewing recipe.

The December update does not yet have a name. Mojang announces names closer to release once features are locked in.

For fans, this means a short wait with a longer one behind it. Mojang also confirmed during the showcase that Minecraft's first new dimension in 15 years will arrive in 2027. A dimension is a separate playable world linked to the main game, like the Nether and the End.

Expect more detail on the ice caves drop as December nears, including its final name and release date.
