Leeds United centre-back Joe Rodon will be out for eight to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury, manager Daniel Farke has confirmed (BBC Sport).

The 28-year-old Wales international was forced off after 34 minutes of Leeds' 1-1 Premier League draw with Brentford. Farke initially hoped the problem was nothing more than cramp, telling reporters on 30 August that he was hopeful Rodon had avoided serious damage. Scans have since told a different story. Rodon will definitely not play before the next international break, and his recovery timeline could stretch into November.

Farke did not hide the significance. He described Rodon as a key player and called the injury a big blow for Leeds, who only returned to the Premier League this season and are still finding their feet at the top level.

Rodon had started the campaign in promising fashion, playing in Leeds' season-opening league win at Nottingham Forest and a Carabao Cup victory against the same opponents. Losing him now strips Farke of his first-choice centre-back at a point where the fixture list offers no breathing room. Leeds travel to Brighton on Saturday, kicking off at 15:00 BST.

The injury also forces Farke to reshuffle a defence already stretched thin. Gabriel Gudmundsson has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring problem in pre-season, and Rodon's absence puts added pressure on Leeds to bring in a wing-back before the window closes. In the meantime, Farke acknowledged he may have to deploy James Justin — a full-back by trade — at centre-back to plug the gap.

Leeds did manage to strengthen their left-back options on deadline day by signing French defender Melvin Bard. That piece of business addressed one problem area, but the centre of defence is where Rodon's loss will be felt most keenly.

For fans, this means watching a back line held together with improvised parts during the toughest stretch of the early-season calendar. A centre-back pairing is the foundation everything else builds on — get that wrong, and the whole team feels the tremors.

Wales will feel the absence too. Craig Bellamy's side face Portugal on 24 September and Denmark on 27 September in away Uefa Nations League Group 4 matches, followed by home fixtures against Norway and Denmark at the start of October. Rodon, a regular starter for his country, now looks certain to miss that entire block of internationals — a blow for a Wales side navigating a competitive group against high-calibre opposition.

What began as a twinge in a Thursday night draw has become a two-month absence that reshapes Leeds' defensive plans and weakens Wales on the international stage. Farke's hope that it was "just cramp" gave way to the scan results no manager wants to read.
