Telluride Unveils 53rd Festival Lineup: World Premieres, Malkovich Tribute, and a Palme d'Or Winner
The 53rd Telluride Film Festival revealed its full lineup on 3 September 2026, with world premieres led by Andrew Scott in 'Elsinore', Julianne Moore in 'The Debut', and Kate O'Flynn in 'Tender Loving Care' (Variety). The festival runs 4–7 September in the Colorado mountain town of Telluride.
Three figures received special tribute: actor John Malkovich, actress Sandra Hüller, and writer-director Andrew Haigh. Malkovich arrived with Martin McDonagh's 'Wild Horse Nine'; Hüller with two films, Paweł Pawlikowski's 'Fatherland' and Markus Schleinzer's 'Rose'; and Haigh with his new drama 'A Long Winter', which had its world premiere at the festival.
The program stretches wide. Werner Herzog returns with 'Bucking Fastard'. Jordan Firstman brings 'Club Kid'. Joshua Oppenheimer, already in the lineup as a tributee-adjacent name, screens 'The Revolution Against Death'. Jennifer Peedom's 'Tenzing' — a retelling of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, starring Tom Hiddleston and Genden Phuntsok — made its world premiere on the mountain.
Telluride also served as a landing pad for films that have already travelled the festival circuit. Danny Boyle's newspaper drama 'Ink', starring Jack O'Connell and Guy Pearce, screened at Telluride after opening the Venice festival earlier in the week. Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord', which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, arrived with leads Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Léa Seydoux headlined Marie Kreutzer's Cannes title 'Gentle Monster'. And 'The Only Living Pickpocket in New York', featuring John Turturro, made the trip from Sundance.
Rounding out the program: the Zellner brothers' 'Alpha Gang', Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert's 'The Idiot(s)', and 'La Bola Negra' from the Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.
Behind the selections, Julie Huntsinger marked her 20th year as festival director. Actor Rebecca Hall was announced as the 2026 Guest Director, a curatorial role that invites a prominent film-maker or artist to shape part of the program. The festival's poster was designed by Bella Freud. Passes are sold out; the most accessible tier, the Cinephile Pass, was priced at $390.
What makes Telluride matter in the industry calendar is timing. Held over Labour Day weekend in the United States, it sits alongside Venice and just ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival — the three festivals that together set the conversation for the autumn awards corridor. Films that land well at Telluride frequently become fixtures in the months of industry voting that follow. The festival does not give prizes; it gives attention, and in this business, attention is the currency that drives a film from the art house to a wider release.
The program also listed authors Jonathan Lethem, Phillip Lopate, and Michael Ondaatje, alongside film-makers Guy Maddin, Errol Morris, and Joshua Oppenheimer, as participants in the festival's broader conversation series — a Telluride tradition of pairing cinema with literary and documentary voices across the long weekend.
