Supergirl Lands on HBO Max September 10 After $126 Million Theatrical Run
DC's Supergirl will begin streaming on HBO Max on September 10, according to Variety. The date puts the film on the platform roughly eleven weeks after its theatrical opening on June 26.
The film stars Milly Alcock in the title role, fresh off her turn as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's House of the Dragon and as Simone in Netflix's 2025 limited series Sirens. Craig Gillespie directed from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, adapting Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic series by Tom King. In that story, Supergirl and a young alien girl named Ruthye travel across the galaxy to hunt Krem of the Yellow Hill after he murders Ruthye's father. Jason Momoa appears as the interstellar bounty hunter Lobo (Variety).
Supergirl arrived in theatres a year after Superman relaunched the DC Universe under studio co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. It debuted to $37.1 million from roughly 3,600 North American locations — domestic, meaning the United States and Canada — and $62.6 million globally on its opening weekend, finishing its theatrical run with $126 million worldwide. Against its production budget, the film lost an estimated $100 million to $120 million (Variety). It received a "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B-minus grade in CinemaScore exit polls — the latter drawn from opening-night audiences surveyed in cinemas.
Peter Safran, who co-runs DC Studios alongside Gunn, told the New York Times that while Supergirl did not meet box-office expectations, it is one component of a broader long-term DC Studios strategy (Variety).
DC Studios had flagged the project early. On January 31, 2023, the studio announced a slate of ten new film and television projects that included Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, describing it as a science-fiction adventure based on King's comics (DC.com).
The streaming move was confirmed weeks after Warner Bros. had not yet set an official HBO Max date as of August 20 (NorthJersey.com). DC's own website also lists the film as available digitally and on HBO Max (DC.com).
The theatrical-to-streaming window has been shrinking across the industry, and Warner Bros. has followed a similar pattern with its DC titles: Superman landed on HBO Max on September 19, 2025, roughly two months after its cinema release (Variety). The Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, was eyeing a start of filming in April 2026 with a Lex Luthor team-up (Variety).
Alcock, for her part, told Variety in June that she was "honored" by queer readings of the character and praised the film's decision to skip a romance storyline (Variety).
For audiences who missed Supergirl in cinemas — or simply want another look — September 10 is the date to circle on HBO Max.
