Pearl Abyss has unveiled the first major expansion for Crimson Desert, and it is going in unexpected directions. Titled "Chartering the Unknown," the add-on was revealed during Sony's September 3 PlayStation State of Play broadcast and launches October 15, 2026 on most platforms — October 16 at 7:00 KST for regions on that timezone, according to Pearl Abyss's official notice (Pearl Abyss). Pre-order bonuses are already live (GamingBible).

Crimson Desert, a single-player open-world action RPG from the South Korean studio behind the MMO Black Desert, launched on March 19, 2026 and was voted March's top new game in PlayStation's Players' Choice poll (PlayStation Blog). The base game earned praise for the scale of its world; PlayStation's own hands-on report covered four hours in it (PlayStation Blog). Six months later, the studio is back with an expansion that pushes far beyond the desert that gave the game its name.

The new region is dominated by a large body of water and a city where abused workers are rebelling against their leaders. That setting brings naval combat reminiscent of Assassin's Creed — players can captain a ship — plus maritime exploration and encounters with giant underwater dragons (GameSpot; IGN).

Underwater, players pilot submarines, ride sharks, and use a jetpack to navigate. It is a sharp turn for a game whose original pitch centred on a mercenary crossing a harsh desert frontier.

On land, the expansion introduces a building system that lets players place walls, construct rooms, and arrange furniture through an interface GameSpot compared to The Sims and Paralives. Structures can grow from a foundation into a full stone fortress, complete with scaffolding players can climb. You can hire employees — kitchen staff, a travelling merchant — each with different stats and roles. Attack and defence statistics visible in the footage suggest players will need to protect what they build.

Romance is also on the table. Protagonist Kliff MacDuff can pursue relationships with NPCs, shown in the reveal trailer when he offers a bouquet of flowers to one of them.

What makes this stand out is the breadth. A single expansion is simultaneously adding submarine combat, castle construction, a hireling economy, and a romance system — mechanics that individually anchor entire games. Whether all of it lands cohesively is a question for October.

The expansion, formally titled "Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown," will not be available on the Mac App Store at launch, Pearl Abyss confirmed in its official notice (Pearl Abyss). The reveal trailer is now live on PlayStation's PS5 Games YouTube channel (YouTube).

With Crimson Desert already recognised as a Players' Choice winner and Pearl Abyss committing to an expansion of this ambition within six months of launch, the studio is signalling that the desert was only the beginning.
