Hampshire power into One-Day Cup knockouts as Adams stars with bat and ball
Hampshire booked their place in the One-Day Cup knockout stages after Georgia Adams produced a century and a vital bowling spell in a nine-wicket win over Durham at Chester-le-Street. Adams hit an unbeaten 106 and took 2-26, steering Hampshire to their target of 201 with more than 12 overs to spare. Durum were pinned down early in their innings. Adams and Amanda-Jane Wellington combined for 5-56 from 20 overs — the allocated quota each bowler can send down in this 50-over format — as Durham slumped to 129-8 and then 158-9. A last-wicket stand of 42 in four overs between Eleanor Larosa, who raced to 51 off 36 balls, and Katie Levick (12) at least carried Durham to 200-9 from their 50 overs.
The chase looked straightforward, and Adams made certain it was. She put on 86 for the first wicket with Ella McCaughan (31) and then 115 with Abi Norgrove, who finished 59 not out. Hampshire collected five points, wrapping up the win with 12.3 overs unused.
Elsewhere, Warwickshire climbed into third place in the group with a seven-wicket win over bottom side Essex at Edgbaston. Phoebe Brett took 4-42 and Hannah Baker 3-26 as Essex were bowled out for 202 in the 45th over. A 75-run sixth-wicket partnership between Liberty Heap (52) and Sophia Smale (42) had given Essex's innings some respectability after early trouble.
Warwickshire stumbled to 86-3 in reply before captain Katie George and Abi Freeborn took the game away. The pair added 122, with George making 72 and Freeborn 64. George's half-century was her fourth of the competition to go with one hundred. Warwickshire completed the chase with 81 balls remaining, moving one point clear of Somerset in the standings.
Somerset kept the pressure on with a five-run win over Yorkshire at Headingley. Defending champions Lancashire, meanwhile, continued their late charge. A fourth consecutive victory — a 10-run win on the DLS method (the statistical calculation used to reset targets when rain interrupts) against Surrey at Farington — kept their knockout hopes alive.
For Hampshire, the appeal is obvious: a captain scoring hundreds and taking wickets in the same match is the kind of all-round performance that wins knockout cricket. For the group table, the final rounds now carry genuine tension, with Warwickshire, Somerset and Lancashire all scrambling for position behind the two qualified sides.
