Carpenter Hat-Trick Fires Sale Sharks Past Bath in Prem Rugby Cup Opener
Sale Sharks ran in seven unanswered tries to overwhelm Bath 50-28 and open their Prem Rugby Cup campaign with a statement victory at the CorpAcq Stadium on Sunday 6 September.
Bath, the defending cup holders after winning the competition in 2024-25, actually started the brighter side. Two early tries put them 14-5 ahead and looked to have settled the visitors into their stride. Then the game turned.
Full-back Joe Carpenter took over. The 23-year-old scored a hat-trick of tries either side of half-time and was involved in almost everything Sale produced going forward, described as excellent throughout by the BBC's match report (BBC Sport). Tom Roebuck had already got Sale on the board inside three minutes, running onto a Carpenter kick into the corner, but it was the full-back's relentless attacking that flipped the match.
The procession of tries came from all angles. Tye Raymont crossed. Then Xavier Roe finished a sensational pitch-length counter-attack — sparked when Nathan Jibulu's tackle deep in Sale territory won a turnover, and Carpenter provided the assist to send Roe clear. Hooker Jibulu got his own try for good measure. Alfie Longstaff put the result beyond doubt at 50-14 with ten minutes remaining, before Bath added two late consolation scores.
George Lozowski kicked five conversions for Sale, keeping the scoreboard ticking as the tries stacked up. Bath's responses came through Tuipulotu, Griffin, Jasper Spandler and Tom Carr-Smith, with Donoghue adding four conversions, but the second-half gap was simply too wide to close.
Both clubs know what it takes to win this trophy. Sale lifted the Prem Rugby Cup in 2019-20; Bath were the reigning champions after their 2024-25 triumph. The competition — English rugby union's domestic cup, sitting beneath the Gallagher Premiership in the calendar — gives squads a chance to blood emerging talent and build early-season rhythm before the league campaign begins.
For Sale, there is also the added backdrop of Courtney Lawes arriving on a one-year deal ahead of the 2026-27 Premiership season. The 105-cap England forward, who can play at lock or in the back row, captained Northampton Saints to the Premiership title in 2024 before two years at French side Brive. He has said he wants to finish his career playing at the top level of English rugby (Sale Sharks).
What stands out from this opener is the depth of Sale's attacking weaponry. Seven different try-scorers, a full-back running the show, and a defensive turnover deep in their own territory turned into a try at the other end. Bath's early double offered a false dawn; once Sale found their rhythm, the gulf grew quickly.
Sale took their 100 per cent record into a trip to Gloucester the following Saturday. Bath, meanwhile, must wait until 6 November, when they host Bristol, for their next cup fixture — giving them time to regroup after a punishing afternoon in Greater Manchester.
