Jimmy Smits has joined the fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, AMC+ confirmed on September 8, 2026. The network also announced that the season will premiere sometime in 2027 and released a teaser that introduces Smits' character in its closing moments.

Smits plays Captain Alejandro Perkins, a former U.S. Navy officer and medical doctor. In the teaser, Perkins looks at a bloody, confused Daryl Dixon — played by Norman Reedus — and says, "Welcome home, son," before the screen cuts to black (Deadline). It is a spare, pointed introduction that tells viewers almost nothing and promises quite a lot.

AMC had already begun rolling out the final-season campaign. The network published a press release on September 2, 2026 debuting the first look at the new episodes and confirming the 2027 premiere (AMC Networks). Before that, the show's official Facebook page unveiled the final-season poster on August 3, 2026, with the tagline "It's all been leading to this" (The Walking Dead on Facebook). The fourth season being the last was first announced during the show's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026 (The Walking Dead on Facebook).

Showrunner David Zabel said the final season will complete the story of Daryl and Carol in Spain and is the last season of this iteration of the show. Season 3 tracked the pair continuing their journey towards home and the ones they love. In the final run, Daryl and Carol grasp onto hope while crossing the ravaged badlands of Spain.

Alongside Reedus, the cast includes Melissa McBride as Carol, plus Romain Levi, Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbués. The executive producer roster is deep: Zabel, Scott M. Gimple, Reedus, McBride, Greg Nicotero, Brian Bockrath, Angela Kang, Jason Richman, Dan Percival and Steve Squillante.

Smits is a familiar face on premium television. He most recently reprised his role from the original Dexter in Showtime's Dexter: Resurrection Season 1. His casting brings a performer with decades of high-profile credits — NYPD Blue, The West Wing, Sons of Anarchy — into a franchise that has itself been running across multiple spin-offs since the flagship Walking Dead series ended in 2022.

For fans, the teaser offers a genuine hook. A new character calling Daryl "son" raises an immediate question about Daryl's past — something the franchise has mined for tension across more than a decade of storytelling. Whether Perkins turns out to be ally, threat or something more complicated is exactly the kind of thread a final season can pull.

The announcement closes the loop on a series that began as a solo spin-off and grew into a two-hander. Daryl Dixon launched in 2023 with Reedus' character washed ashore in France, then expanded its scope to bring McBride's Carol across the Atlantic. The final season moves the action to Spain. Production details and an exact premiere date within 2027 have not yet been disclosed.
