Jim Geoghan, Creator of 'The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,' Dies at 79

Jim Geoghan, the television writer and producer who co-created the Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, died on 6 September in Los Angeles at the age of 79. His death was confirmed to Variety by his daughter, Genevieve Geoghan.

Geoghan co-created and executive produced The Suite Life of Zack & Cody alongside Danny Kallis. The series premiered on Disney Channel on 18 March 2005 and ran for three seasons, ending in 2008. It starred Cole and Dylan Sprouse as twin brothers living in a hotel, alongside Ashley Tisdale and Brenda Song. A sequel, The Suite Life on Deck, ran for three further seasons from 2008 to 2011.

The original series earned Geoghan two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children's Program, in 2007 and 2008 (Variety).

Before Suite Life, Geoghan had a long career in American sitcom writing. His credits included Silver Spoons, The Facts of Life, Boys Will Be Boys, and The Van Dyke Show (Variety). He began his comedy career in 1973, joining the New York comedy trio Divided We Stand. The move into television writing came later, when he relocated to Los Angeles with his wife Annie, who is also an actor.

Geoghan's work extended beyond television. His play Only Kidding ran off Broadway for 500 performances. Another play, Light Sensitive, premiered at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego and has since been staged in more than 40 productions across the United States (Variety).

For an audience that grew up watching Disney Channel in the 2000s, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody was a fixture of the after-school schedule. The show's three-season run, followed by three more on On Deck, gave the Sprouse twins a platform that carried them into broader acting careers. The person who built that world for them worked across sitcoms and stage plays for three decades first.
