Speaking to Billboard Brasil from his home in Brighton ahead of the show, Cook described arriving in Brazil as "like meeting the rest of your family that you didn't know existed." Billboard. The 7 September bill placed Cook in rare company. Elton John came out of official touring retirement for a one-off performance at the same edition of Rock in Rio, and Brazilian musical figure Gilberto Gil also appeared on the lineup.
