John Malkovich Pulls Out of Tel Aviv Performance After Fake Quotes Printed in His Name
John Malkovich has withdrawn from a scheduled Tel Aviv performance of his satirical stage show The Music Critic after a press release printed quotes falsely attributed to him, he said in a statement reported by Variety on 8 September 2026.
The actor said a PR company hired by the Israeli promoter drafted a quote he never made and that he was not consulted before it appeared in print. The article announcing the Tel Aviv date was published in The Hollywood Reporter and first appeared in The Jerusalem Post, Malkovich said. He described the printed quotes as unapproved and not reflective of his feelings, and said that because of this he could not participate in the performance (Variety).
The Tel Aviv date had been set for 13 April 2027 at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium (Heichal Hatarbut), as reported by The Jerusalem Post on 8 September 2026 (The Jerusalem Post). Malkovich was described as returning to Israel to star in the production, a satirical theatrical musical written and conceived by violinist and composer Aleksey Igudesman (The Hollywood Reporter).
The Music Critic has been a long-running vehicle for Malkovich. He said he has toured the show for nearly two decades and performed it in 47 countries (Variety). The production blends theatre and classical music, with Malkovich playing a caustic critic skewering composers and their work.
The sequence of events was compressed. The Hollywood Reporter published its announcement of the Tel Aviv date on 5 September 2026. Three days later, Malkovich had pulled out, citing the fabricated quotes as the reason.
For a performer of Malkovich's standing, the principle at stake is straightforward: an actor's words, even in a press release, belong to the actor. The show itself — well-reviewed across continents and two decades on the road — will continue elsewhere. The Tel Aviv date, for now, will not.
