The Families Stone Brings Back Original Cast for Sequel
Searchlight is bringing the Stone family back together for a sequel titled The Families Stone, with ten original cast members returning and filming planned in New York this autumn, Deadline reported on 12 September 2026.
Sarah Jessica Parker returns as Meredith Morton, Dermot Mulroney as Everett Stone, Claire Danes as Julie Morton, Rachel McAdams as Amy Stone and Luke Wilson as Ben Stone. The line-up also includes Craig T. Nelson as patriarch Kelly Stone, Elizabeth Reaser as Susannah Stone, Tyrone Giordano as Thad Stone, Paul Schneider as Brad Stevenson and Brian White as Patrick Thomas.
Tom Bezucha, who wrote and directed the 2005 film The Family Stone, has returned to direct the sequel from his own script. The story picks up 20 years after the death of matriarch Sybil Stone.
One chair will be empty. Diane Keaton, who played Sybil, died in October 2025 at age 79 and will not appear in the new film.
For newcomers, the original was a holiday ensemble drama about a tense Christmas gathering when Everett brings his uptight girlfriend Meredith home to meet his unruly family in New England. It earned more than $92 million worldwide in its December 2005 theatre run, according to the same Deadline report. Parker received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Meredith.
The road to the sequel has played out in public. Bezucha said in November 2025 that a follow-up was in the works, CNN reported at the time. Mulroney then confirmed the title The Families Stone in May and said “everyone’s up for returning,” People reported on 25 May 2026. Wilson later described the new script as “really funny,” People reported in July.
What makes this stand out is the scale of the reunion. Two decades on, the same writer-director and nearly the full favourite ensemble are back in place. For fans, this means the next chapter will centre on how the family has carried on without its matriarch.
