Blizzard ends six-year wait with new Heroes of the Storm hero Xal'atath

Blizzard will add Xal'atath to Heroes of the Storm as a playable character. It is the first new hero for the game in six years.

Blizzard revealed the plan during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony, according to GameSpot reporting published on 12 September 2026. The ceremony is Blizzard's headline showcase event. That placement put the announcement in front of players watching in the hall and online.

Xal'atath will arrive in two steps. She will join the Public Test Realm beginning 14 September. That realm is a separate test version of the game where players can try new material early before it goes live. Full release is set for 28 September.

The split gives everyone a clear timetable. Test players get two weeks to learn her kit. Blizzard gets two weeks to check balance and fix faults before the wider launch. Players who prefer to wait can meet her in the live game from 28 September.

Heroes of the Storm is a team-based online game where two sides of five players pick heroes and fight for map objectives. Each pick changes what a team can do. New heroes matter because they widen those choices and shift how teams organise an attack or a defence.

That is why the gap stands out. Xal'atath is the first new character since Hogger was added in 2020, GameSpot reported. Six years is a long pause for this kind of game. Regulars have played the same roster for seasons. Newcomers have joined without ever seeing a launch hero.
