John Cho and Mahershala Ali collide in Bassam Tariq's TIFF premiere
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother premiered on Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, bringing John Cho and Mahershala Ali to the screen as men on opposite sides of faith and violence.
The film is directed by Bassam Tariq and set for release by Amazon MGM, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It runs 112 minutes and is in English. Toronto lists it as a 2026 production from the United States of America, shown as a Special Presentation, a slot reserved for high-profile titles, in the festival's 2026 Official Selection.
Cho plays Haun Yoon. He is an Army veteran whose near-death experience leads him to found a militant Christian church that uses violence. Ali plays Latif, a devout Muslim contract killer living in Texas, grieving his wife and raising three children alone.
That Texas setting carries a personal echo for Cho. He immigrated as a child from Korea to Houston, Texas. He spoke to the trade about playing a character shaped by that state, and by military service and belief.
The premiere was a first for its director at the festival. Toronto notes that the film marked Tariq's TIFF debut. The 51st edition of TIFF took place Sept. 10-20, 2026, and the festival also listed a Sept. 18 screening of the film presented with open captions, meaning dialogue and key sounds appear as text on screen.
What makes this stand out is the pairing at its centre. Two fathers, two faiths, and two very different uses of force. The story puts them in collision in Texas.
For fans, this means a short wait for the next public showing. The American Cinematheque will present the West Coast premiere at 7:00 PM on Sept. 23, 2026, according to the American Cinematheque. Further release plans from Amazon MGM have not been detailed in the materials released so far.
