Michelle Yeoh operates at gunpoint in TIFF premiere The Surgeon
Michelle Yeoh is back in the operating room at gunpoint in The Surgeon, which has had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, according to Deadline.
Yeoh plays Eliza, a world-renowned surgeon who is retiring after a long career. The film runs 92 minutes and is written and directed by Dr Roshan Sethi.
The story turns on an abduction. Eliza is taken and forced to operate on a mystery patient, a premise earlier described as a retired surgeon kidnapped and made to operate. It is billed as an action thriller about a former surgeon who is kidnapped and given an impossible choice, according to Deadline. TIFF’s own listing puts it simply: a gifted doctor steps down after an accomplished career, only to return to surgery under threat.
Martin Freeman co-stars as Sean, a gravely ill crime boss. Yuri Kolokolnikov plays Cole. The tight cast keeps the focus on the operating table and the armed men around it.
Detail does a lot of work here. Eliza asks for Thin Lizzy songs to be played while she operates. Yeoh trained with real surgeons for the role, and the film blends action with medical drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Behind the camera, Suzi Battersby served as prosthetics supervisor and Laurent Demanioff as fight choreographer.
Toronto has placed the film in a science frame as well as a sales frame. TIFF lists The Surgeon as the 2026 Sloan Science on Film Showcase Official Selection, and its 15 September screening includes a post-screening Q&A with the director. The Hollywood Reporter put it on its TIFF hot list alongside films associated with Zack Snyder and Werner Herzog, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Variety had earlier described it as a brutal action film led by Yeoh.
Yeoh, Freeman and Sethi also appeared together at Deadline Studio Day 1 at the Bisha Hotel during the 2026 festival.
For fans, this means a familiar set-up with an unfamiliar lead. A crime boss in need of secret surgery is classic thriller material. A retiring woman surgeon at the centre of it, scalpel in hand and music on, is the twist the film is selling.
