Michelle Yeoh swaps martial arts for surgery in TIFF thriller The Surgeon
Michelle Yeoh plays a retired gifted doctor forced back to the operating room at gunpoint in The Surgeon. The film is written and directed by Roshan Sethi, Deadline reported in its TIFF Studio interview. It had its first screening on Saturday, 12 September at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.
In the story, Yeoh's character is abducted by a criminal gang led by Martin Freeman to treat a member with a life-threatening condition. Freeman co-stars as the gang leader. The set-up puts the surgery itself at the centre of an action thriller.
Yeoh told Deadline's TIFF Studio that she is always looking to do an action film, but not a normal action film. She said she was attracted to The Surgeon because she had not done action like that before. Her character is a surgeon, not a martial artist.
That distinction shaped the physical performance. Yeoh said her movement should not be smooth and action-packed. Instead, her surgeon works with precision and dexterity. Small gestures. Steady hands.
To get there, Yeoh trained with real surgeons, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That preparation included dissecting a pig, Malaysia News Yahoo reported. It was practical research for a practical role.
Sethi previously co-created the Fox series The Resident, Deadline reported. The Surgeon is being sold to distributors by sales agents 193 and WME — in plain terms, the companies that licence a film's rights cinema by cinema, territory by territory. Yeoh, Freeman and Sethi appeared together for the film on Day 1 of Deadline Studio at TIFF 2026 at the Bisha Hotel.
The Toronto festival also gave the film a science spotlight. Its 15 September screening was the 2026 Sloan Science on Film Showcase Official Selection, with a special post-screening Q&A with the director, according to TIFF. TIFF's film page describes The Surgeon as "as fun as it is thrilling."
What makes this stand out for general audiences is the swap. No martial-arts choreography. The tension comes from an operation carried out under threat.
