David Corenswet leads Giants biopic Mr. Irrelevant for Christmas Day release
Paramount and Skydance Sports have released the trailer for Mr. Irrelevant, starring David Corenswet as former New York Giants running back John Tuggle. The film is set for a wide release in theatres on Christmas Day, Deadline reported on 13 September.
The title is the nickname given to the last player chosen in the National Football League draft. Tuggle was that player in 1983, the final pick of the final round. He went on to play for the Giants.
The film dramatises his final months. Tuggle died of cancer in 1986 at age 25, and the story centres on that period of his life.
Corenswet leads the cast as Tuggle. Isabel May co-stars as his love interest, and Michael Shannon plays Bill Parcells, the Giants head coach of that era.
The supporting cast includes David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright. Jonathan Levine directed the film from a script by Nick Santora.
Mr. Irrelevant is a Paramount and Skydance film, The Hollywood Reporter reported when the project was announced. The trailer launch confirms its place on the calendar in the busy Christmas corridor, when theatres fill with holiday audiences.
What makes this stand out is the scale of the story. It is not about a long career or a trophy run. For fans, this means a short, real-life stint in professional football told from the end of the draft list rather than the top.
