The Last of Us Part 2 PC multiplayer mod cancelled after PlayStation request

A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has been cancelled after PlayStation asked its creators to stop work. The build was due out this month. It will now not launch.
Modder Speclizer said he received a letter sent on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the project not be released, as reported by Eurogamer. PlayStation contacted the developers behind the mod. Development halted after that contact.
The mod had been in development since January 2026. Speclizer said it was due for release in September 2026. That is about eight months of work stopped just before launch.
The idea was to add player-versus-player action to the PC version. PvP, short for player-versus-player, means real people compete against each other rather than facing computer-controlled enemies. A mod is a fan-made add-on that changes or extends an existing game, often downloaded and installed separately by players.
On PC, that kind of project is usually built by small teams or solo creators. The work is unpaid. The tools are pieced together. Testing happens in private groups before anything is shared widely.
Speclizer said the mod would have included listening mechanics to locate enemy players. In plain terms, that is a sound-based system for sensing nearby movement and tracking rivals you cannot yet see. It rewards quiet movement and careful listening, with players trying to hear others before they are heard.
It was also set to offer different perks. Perks are small abilities or bonuses that adjust how a character moves, fights or survives. Players often mix and match them to suit their style, trading speed for stealth or toughness for awareness.
The mod would also have added maps not found in the base single-player game. That would have given the multiplayer build its own spaces to play in, separate from the story locations. New maps matter to PvP players because layout shapes sightlines, hiding spots and escape routes.
For fans waiting for a download, this means there is nothing to install. The PC game stays as released, without this fan-made multiplayer layer. The stop came from the rights holder's request, not from a delay inside the mod team.
The news was shared in September 2026, the same month the mod was due out. For players who had followed progress since January, the timing is abrupt. Months of building and testing ended with a short cancellation message and no release.
