The unofficial multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has been cancelled. Mod team Speclizer said it received a letter sent on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking that the project not be released.

Speclizer said the mod will no longer launch at the request of Naughty Dog and PlayStation. The team shared the news in a public statement, as reported by Video Games Chronicle on 13 September 2026. That statement is the only public account of the request so far.

A mod, short for modification, is an unofficial alteration made by fans rather than the original studio. This one aimed to add online multiplayer to the PC version, the mode where groups of players meet and compete over the internet. Speclizer had been building it since January, with release planned for this month.

The timing meant cancellation arrived just as the work was nearing completion. Eight months of building, testing and map design will now never reach download. For a small team, that is a sharp stop.

The mod supported 4v4 matches, four players on each side, according to earlier reporting by Wccftech in August 2026. Planned features included custom perks, new maps and limited listening mechanics. Speclizer said development was partly funded through Patreon, the membership service where supporters pay a regular amount to back creators.

Perks are selectable bonuses that change how a character plays, such as faster healing or quieter movement. Listening is the series term for sensing nearby enemies by sound, often shown as outlines through walls. The team planned a restricted version of that ability alongside its own maps.

What makes this stand out is how close it got. A January start and a September target meant months of visible work before the stop. Players were waiting weeks, not years.

For players who tracked the project, the loss is straightforward. There will be no fan-made way to play this entry online on PC. Backers who paid monthly through Patreon supported a release that will now not happen.

Speclizer has not announced revised plans. The mod pages now point to the cancellation statement. The September release is off.
