Netflix and Sega strike multititle deal led by Crazy Taxi film
Netflix and Sega will turn Crazy Taxi into a feature film as the first project in a new multititle deal covering several Sega game franchises, Variety reported on 14 September 2026.
A multititle deal means more than one game is lined up for the screen from the start. Crazy Taxi goes first.
The film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The pair wrote the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun.
It will be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, alongside Toru Nakahara of Sega. The three are producers behind the Sonic film franchises.
The same deal includes a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series for children. It is in development, meaning it is in early planning and has not yet been ordered to series.
The show is being developed with Carlos Stevens and Nakahara. It will present Sonic and his friends as heroes for an upper pre-school audience.
Netflix and Sega have worked together on Sonic before. Three seasons of the 3D animated series Sonic Prime are available to stream only on Netflix. That earlier collaboration was announced in 2021, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The third project named in the new agreement is a film based on Stranger Than Heaven, an action-adventure game. Nakahara, who is head producer at Sega, is set as producer on that film.
Stranger Than Heaven comes from RGG Studio. The studio developed the Like a Dragon: Yakuza series, which has sold over 30 million copies.
Timing links the games and the screens. Crazy Taxi made its arcade debut in 1999. Its latest title, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for release in 2027.
The Stranger Than Heaven game is set for release in January 2027. No release dates have been disclosed for the films or the new Sonic series.
The report names Brandon Riegg, Netflix's vice-president of nonfiction and transmedia, and Shuji Utsumi, Sega's president and chief operating officer, among the executives attached to the wider partnership.
