Matthew Rhys wins limited-series lead actor Emmy for The Beast in Me
Matthew Rhys has won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series for Netflix's The Beast in Me.
He took the prize for playing Nile Jarvis, ahead of four other nominees in the category, according to Variety reporting published on 15 September. The category is listed by the Television Academy as Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie.
The other nominees were Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit, Riz Ahmed for Bait, Oscar Isaac for Beef and Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story. A limited series, meaning a show that tells a closed story in one season, competes separately from ongoing drama and comedy series.
The Beast in Me entered the night with nine Emmy nominations. Rhys also shared in the show's nomination for outstanding limited series as an executive producer, meaning he is credited as one of the programme's lead decision-makers as well as its star.
It was a three-nomination year for Rhys. Alongside his two nods for The Beast in Me, he was also nominated for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for Widow's Bay on Apple TV.
Rhys has now collected eight Emmy nominations across his career. That run includes three nominations and one win for the FX series The Americans, plus a previous nomination for playing the title role in HBO's Perry Mason.
What makes this stand out is the breadth. Ahead of the ceremony, GoldDerby noted that wins for both Widow's Bay and The Beast in Me would make Rhys the first actor to win all three lead performance categories at the Emmys: drama, comedy and limited. He has now secured the limited prize.
