Matthew Rhys makes Emmys history with two lead acting wins in one night
Matthew Rhys won two lead acting Emmys in a single night, a first in the awards' history.
The Welsh actor took lead actor in a limited series — a show told as one self-contained story — for Netflix's The Beast in Me, and lead actor in a comedy series for Apple TV's Widow's Bay, according to Variety. No performer had won both lead actor prizes at the same ceremony before.
The double win came at the 78th Emmy Awards. Final-round online voting for the ceremony began on 17 August 2026, according to the Television Academy.
In Widow's Bay, Rhys plays Mayor Tom Loftis. The Television Academy lists him as the 2026 nominee for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the role, billed as Mayor Tom Loftis, per Television Academy.
The show itself is a horror-comedy on Apple TV that premiered on 29 April. It was created and run by Katie Dippold, the writer behind The Heat and Ghostbusters reboot work who moved into television showrunning — the person in day-to-day charge of a series — for this project.
Rhys arrived with history already on his side. He won lead drama actor in 2018 for FX's The Americans. With the two new trophies, he becomes the first male performer to win Emmys in all three lead acting categories: drama, comedy and limited.
That is rare company. Barbara Stanwyck won all three lead actress categories between 1961 and 1983. No man had completed the set until now.
Other actors have won twice in one night, but in different combinations. James Earl Jones won lead drama actor for Gabriel's Fire and supporting actor in a limited programme for Heat Wave in 1991. Stockard Channing won two supporting actress Emmys in 2002, for The West Wing and The Matthew Shepard Story.
Rhys had more than acting at stake. He held two additional nominations as an executive producer — the credit given to senior creative and business leads — on both of his series. The Pitt led the field overall that year with 25 nominations.
What makes this stand out is the workload behind it. Two lead roles means two sets, two crews and two production schedules. For fans, this means both performances now sit in the record books together.
