Allison Janney wins eighth Emmy for The Diplomat, ties all-time record

Allison Janney won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for The Diplomat. It is her eighth Emmy win as a performer, which ties the all-time record, according to Variety.

The win came at the 78th Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony aired on NBC and Peacock. Mariska Hargitay hosted. Jesse Collins Entertainment produced the show.

Janney beat six other nominees in the category. They were Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Katherine LaNasa, Sepideh Moafi, Julianne Nicholson and Karolina Wydra.

The honour puts her level with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Each has eight Emmys as a performer. Jean Smart also tied the eight-win record on the same night.

It was a long road to eight. Janney now has 16 Emmy nominations in total. She won four times for The West Wing: supporting actress in a drama in 2000 and 2001, then lead actress in a drama in 2002 and 2004.

She then won twice for comedy. She took supporting actress in a comedy for Mom in 2014 and 2015. In 2014 she also won guest actress in a drama for Masters of Sex. That is a guest role, meaning a short appearance rather than a full-season part.

What makes this stand out is the spread. Few performers win across drama, comedy and guest categories. Janney has now done all three, then added another drama prize more than a decade later.

In The Diplomat, a Netflix political drama, she plays President Grace Penn. The Television Academy lists the show with 10 Emmy nominations. They included drama series, lead actor for Rufus Sewell, lead actress for Keri Russell, writing, casting and guest actor for Bradley Whitford.

Janney arrived with two nominations in 2026, according to Decider. The supporting drama actress prize was the one that made history.
