Allison Janney honours Nancy Guthrie after Emmy win for The Diplomat

Allison Janney turned her Emmy victory into a message for Savannah Guthrie and her family.

Janney won best supporting actress in a drama for playing President Grace Penn on Netflix's The Diplomat. Backstage after the win, she spoke at length about Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning hours of Feb. 1. She has not been seen or heard from since and is presumed dead.

Janney said she thinks about Nancy every day. She spoke about the loss and what Savannah and her family are going through. She added that she believed all of America was thinking about Nancy.

Savannah Guthrie answered the tribute on Today. She said she was "so touched" that Janney took a moment during her triumph to think about the Guthrie family. She said her family is in pain, needs help, and wants her mum home to give her a proper goodbye.

The case remains open. The day after Nancy Guthrie was taken, a local news station received a ransom note addressed directly to Savannah. It said her mother was "alive but scared." A second note received days later said Nancy had died.

Police have not confirmed either account. Nancy had a heart condition and her medicines were left behind. The Pima County Sheriff's Office and the FBI remain on the case, with no suspect identified.

The family has made repeated public appeals since February. On Feb. 4, Savannah and her siblings posted a tearful video plea on Instagram to the potential abductor, saying they needed to know Nancy was alive, as reported by People.

On Feb. 12, Savannah shared a throwback video of her mum amid the search with the message "We Will Never Give Up on Her," as reported by People.

The 2026 Emmy Awards aired live on NBC until about 11 p.m. ET. Janney's remarks came in the press room backstage after the broadcast honours.
