Romeo + Juliet returns with live orchestra for anniversary tour
Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is returning as a film with live music, starting at the Sydney Opera House on 29 September and then touring the United States from January.
The show is called William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert. The 1996 film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, plays on a big screen with its original dialogue intact while a hybrid ensemble performs the score live in sync, according to details reported by Billboard. A hybrid ensemble here means a mixed group of orchestral players and contemporary musicians following the film beat by beat.
The world premiere is set for 8PM on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 in Sydney. The Sydney Opera House lists a run time of 150 minutes. The production is billed as a 30th anniversary event for the film.
The United States leg kicks off on 9 January in Pennsylvania and will play more than 40 theatres. Early stops include Williamsport on 9 January, Brooklyn on 10 January, Cincinnati on 12 January, Wilkes-Barre on 13 January and Boston on 15 January. The routing then moves through Wilmington, Red Bank, Hershey and Wallingford before reaching Toronto on 26 January, Cleveland on 28 January, Detroit on 29 January, Chicago on 30 January and St. Louis on 31 January.
February brings the tour west. It plays Minneapolis on 4 February, Laramie on 6 February, Salt Lake City on 7 February and Los Angeles on 9 February. It continues to Las Vegas on 10 February, San Francisco on 11 February, Portland on 12 February and Seattle on 13 February. Screenings are also scheduled in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands starting in January.
Other dates extend into 2027. The show plays Popejoy Hall on 20 February, Ruth Eckerd Hall on 2 March 2027 and the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Concert Hall on 5 March 2027. For the Ruth Eckerd Hall date, doors open at 6:00PM and the event starts at 7:00PM, with tickets available from 10:00AM on 18 September, according to Ruth Eckerd Hall.
The live orchestra experience is presented by GEA Live in collaboration with Disney Concerts and Baz Luhrmann. GEA Live producer and managing director Floris Douwes is credited as a producer source for the announcement. The production will return to Australia in May with stops in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, and will tour Europe in the autumn for a 12-country run.
For fans, this means a night at the theatre rather than a standard cinema visit. Expect the full film, the full score played live, and an early start in venues that normally host concerts and stage shows.
