Buffalo 8 takes North American rights to Beckinsale and Phillippe thriller The Patient

Buffalo 8 Distribution has bought the North American rights to The Patient, a psychological thriller starring Kate Beckinsale and Ryan Phillippe.

The deal was closed at the Toronto Film Festival market, the buying and selling side of the festival where distributors pick up finished films, according to Variety on 15 September 2026. North American rights mean the right to put the film out in the United States and Canada. Nikki Stier Justice leads distribution at Buffalo 8.

The story stays inside a medical facility. Phillippe plays a man who wakes there after a collision. He has no memory of the crash. His identity is disputed.

That is the engine of the thriller. A psychological thriller turns on mind games and trust rather than chases. Beckinsale plays Dr Rose, the attending physician in charge of his care.

The wider ward includes David Cade as Dr Williams, Kelly Greyson as the nurse and Michael Sirow as Chris, according to Variety. Small cast. Single location. Tension builds in close quarters.

The film was written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil, who shaped both the script and the shoot. It was produced by Robert Ogden Barnum, Michael Benaroya, Lucas Jarach, Dewil and Raja Collins. Producers organise the financing and day-to-day production. Matthew Helderman and Luke Taylor act as executive producers for Buffalo 8, a role that usually involves backing and oversight rather than daily management.

Post-production work was handled by Buffalo 8 Post Production, the company's in-house finishing organisation for editing, sound and colour. That keeps the final stages under the same roof as the distributor.

Buffalo 8 plans to release The Patient across major VOD platforms in December. VOD, or video on demand, means services where viewers rent or buy a film to watch at home. A physical media release on disc will follow for collectors and libraries.

The project has travelled a long market road. It was first offered to international buyers at the Cannes market in May 2024, according to Deadline. The first image released at that time showed Phillippe as the patient during a medical procedure, according to Collider.

For viewers, this means a short wait. A festival-market sale in September to a December home release is a fast turn.
