HBO's Casey Bloys talks future slate after Apple TV wins Emmys race
HBO came second to Apple TV at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and its chief was already talking about what comes next.
HBO and HBO Max collected 21 wins against 28 for Apple TV, after the ceremony in Los Angeles on Monday. Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys spoke to Deadline during the company's afterparty at the San Vicente Bungalows.
HBO took Outstanding Drama Series for The Pitt and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series for DTF St. Louis. Noah Wyle from The Pitt and Tom Pelphrey from Task were among the network's acting winners. Jean Smart won Lead Comedy Actress for Hacks, tying an Emmy performer record. The comedy series prize itself went to Apple TV's Widow's Bay over Hacks. Apple took the most Emmys for the first time, according to The New York Times.
Bloys praised Apple TV counterparts Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht after the result. Last year HBO had finished tied for No. 1 with Netflix for most wins.
He also gave notes on the slate. He indicated The Last of Us is ending. He indicated The Gilded Age may return for a fifth season. He said family drama pilot How To Survive Without Me, meaning a trial episode made to test a full series, is nearing a pickup to series.
Crave drama Heated Rivalry will get a red carpet premiere for its second season after its blockbuster success, Bloys said. He also provided updates on Season 4 of The White Lotus and the next instalments of True Detective, Big Little Lies and The Rehearsal. Season 4 of The White Lotus is created, written and directed by Mike White, with Alexander Ludwig and AJ Michalka among the new cast, as previously reported by Deadline.
Matthew Rhys from Widow's Bay was among the night's other key winners, according to Reuters, becoming the first person to win two lead acting honours. Bloys took over HBO programming in February 2016. By July 2026 his team had been responsible for 1,208 Emmy nominations and 276 wins.
For fans, this means no long wait to learn the score. One awards night is over. The decisions that decide which crews keep working and which stories get finished have already started.
