Twenty wickets tumble as Surrey and Glamorgan trade collapses at the Oval

Twenty wickets fell on a chaotic opening day at the Kia Oval as Surrey and Glamorgan bowled each other out cheaply.

Glamorgan closed day one on 30-0 in their second innings, a lead of 47 runs, after both sides collapsed in their first attempt with the bat, according to BBC Sport. Surrey had earlier dismissed the visitors for 132 before being rolled over for 115 in reply.

Glamorgan chose to bat first and quickly came unstuck. Jack Hope-Bell top-scored with 33 in a total of 132, with Surrey seamer Auqib Nabi taking 4-36. Matt Fisher supported him with 2-18 from 11 overs before leaving the field with a groin injury.

Surrey's reply was even shorter. Ryan Patel made 26, the highest score of the innings, as the hosts slipped to 115 all out. Zain ul-Hassan did the main damage with 4-26, including the wickets of captain Rory Burns lbw — given out for blocking a ball that would have hit the stumps — for 20 and England batter Ollie Pope for a first-ball duck, dismissed without scoring.

Timm van der Gugten backed up the new-ball burst with 3-31 for Glamorgan. Fisher did not return after his injury and was replaced in Surrey's side during the match by James Taylor under the competition's like-for-like provisions.

Bad light stopped play early. The last 3.4 scheduled overs were lost on 15 September at the Oval.

The fixture is the 64th match of County Championship Division One 2026, scheduled for 15-18 September at the Oval, listed as The Oval by ESPNcricinfo. In the Championship, each team normally bats twice over four days, so Glamorgan's openers had a tricky evening session to negotiate.

What makes this stand out is how little separated the sides. A 17-run first-innings lead is nothing. With ten second-innings wickets in hand and a small advantage already banked, Glamorgan have the edge. Surrey need early wickets on day two to stay in it.
