Glamorgan thrash Surrey at the Oval to seal Division One survival
Glamorgan beat Surrey by 184 runs at the Kia Oval to secure their place in County Championship Division One for next season.

The final margins tell a strange story. Glamorgan made 132 and 594 in their two innings. Surrey replied with 115 and 427. Glamorgan took 19 points. Surrey took three.
Surrey were left chasing 612 to win. That would have been a world record in first-class cricket, the four-day game played with a red ball where each team normally bats twice.
Nothing about the start suggested such a finish. Twenty wickets fell on the opening day. Glamorgan were bowled out for 132. Surrey were then bowled out for 115. Seventeen runs separated the sides after one innings each.
Then came the swing. Glamorgan reached 339-5 by the close of day two, already 356 runs ahead. The lead kept growing.
Asa Tribe led it with 155, his maiden hundred in Division One, the top tier of the County Championship in England and Wales. Mason Crane added 114 not out from lower down the order. Glamorgan’s second innings finally closed at 594. That left Surrey with a mountain.
Surrey climbed for a while. Ryan Patel made 132 at the top of the order. Ollie Pope added 75. At 177-2, Surrey still needed a further 434 runs, but they had wickets in hand and time to bat.
The chase broke after that. Surrey were bowled out for 427. Timm van der Gugten, Ray Toole, Zain ul Hassan and Crane took two wickets apiece to share the work.
What makes this stand out is the context. Glamorgan returned to Division One for the 2026 season. Newly promoted sides often fight simply to stay up. Glamorgan have now done that with a win away to one of the division’s strongest teams, home and away in the same summer.
