An Oxford mathematician has concluded that the Parthenon contains no optical corrections.

Prof Alain Goriely, a mathematician at the University of Oxford, lays out the argument in Royal Society Open Science. He says the visual distortions the temple's slight curves were supposed to correct are either nonsense or practically impossible to see. The Guardian

The curves themselves are not in dispute. The sides of the base, called the stylobate, rise about 6cm in the middle to form a shallow arc. The columns swell outward by about 18mm, a bulge known as entasis. The question is why the builders made them that way.

Goriely traces the idea of optical intent to Vitruvius, a 1st-century Roman architect and engineer who wrote about the Parthenon 400 years after it was built. That much later account gave teachers a clear optics explanation for bends that surveyors could measure.

Goriely tested that explanation with the geometry of human vision. He found the columns stand too upright to create the Hering illusion, in which straight lines look bent when seen against angled lines. He notes there is no proof that the Hering illusion even works in three dimensions. Other effects cited fall below what a person could plausibly notice. A visitor walking around the building would not pick them up.

Instead he points to other reasons for the shapes. The slight rise in the base may have stopped rainwater from pooling. The gently swelling columns may have looked more natural and pleasing to ancient Greeks. Both ideas treat the curves as practical or artistic choices, not corrections for faulty vision.

The broader context here is the power of old written authority in classical architecture. A rule written down centuries after building ended can survive as fact when it offers a clear story for small irregularities. Math modeling shifts the test. It asks not whether a curve exists, but whether a claimed trick of sight could work at that size, distance and depth. Where surveys now measure to the millimetre, the gap between what can be measured and what can be seen becomes central. It does not rest on expert taste.

Looking at what this means for specialist practice, keeping the parts separate matters. Base camber and column swelling involve different shapes and viewing positions. Lumping them under one optical theory hides those differences. Judging each one against numerical limits for what people can perceive gives historians and conservators a clearer way to sort interpretations. The same test could apply to other stone-building traditions where fine adjustments and visual tricks are often linked.

In my view, the replacement ideas need the same tough questioning. Better drainage and a liking for organic forms are simple and plausible. They are still suggestions, not settled motives, and ancient builders often had several reasons at once. The main contribution is therefore to narrow the field. It sets limits on what optics can explain, and leaves artistic, technical and ritual explanations to be made with other evidence.
