Midjourney Medical is building an ultrasound scanner that can image your entire body in 60 seconds—without radiation or magnetic fields. If it works as claimed, that's worth paying attention to.

Here's why: the three existing full-body imaging tools each have a flaw. CT scans are fast but expose you to radiation. MRI scans are safer but take 20 to 30 minutes and won't work if you have a pacemaker or metal implant. Ultrasound is safe and portable, but doctors have historically used it only to zoom in on specific areas—the heart, a pregnancy, a suspicious lump—because it's hard to scan a whole body quickly that way. A system that extends ultrasound across your entire body in a minute would solve a problem none of the current tools cleanly solves.

The engineering required is genuinely difficult. Sound waves don't travel the same way through bone, muscle, and fat. An ultrasound probe array big enough to cover your whole body would be orders of magnitude larger than the handheld devices doctors use today. And you'd need to process the resulting data fast enough to deliver images in 60 seconds. That's a substantial technical bar.

The thing is, Midjourney Medical hasn't published any peer-reviewed research on this scanner. There are no sensitivity or specificity numbers—in other words, no published evidence showing whether the device actually detects diseases or rules them out reliably. There's also no word on regulatory filings with the FDA or European health authorities. Those missing data points are not a minor detail. They're everything.

The distinction matters financially because diagnostic imaging is a hundreds-of-billions-dollar global market. Hospitals pay premium prices for machines that carry FDA clearance—a status called 510(k) approval in the U.S.—and years of published clinical evidence behind them. Without that regulatory green light and that track record, a new scanner can't sit in a hospital's imaging suite next to the existing CT and MRI machines. At best, it might be used for screening, not diagnosis.

Midjourney is known primarily for making AI software that generates images. The company clearly has strength in processing visual data. But medical devices live in a different world entirely—one where regulation is tight, evidence requirements are strict, and decades of hospital experience matter. Whether visual-processing expertise translates to cleared medical hardware is an open question.

For people tracking medical technology companies, the real watching points are regulatory filings, clinical trial announcements, and funding disclosures specific to the Medical division. A 60-second scan time is a marketing claim. Published clinical evidence and regulatory approval are the actual commercial milestones.
