Ultrasound, by contrast, has a solid safety record for repeated use and is already standard in hospitals everywhere.

A ring of sensors capturing vertical slices — like a CT scanner's rotating gantry, but using sound instead of radiation — is a sensible way to cover the whole body systematically and work around those physics constraints.

The harder part is the AI layer. Teaching a machine to correctly identify anatomical structures from ultrasound images is genuinely challenging. Ultrasound pictures are grainier and more operator-dependent than CT or MRI scans, and the contrast between tissues is weaker in some cases. Midjourney Medical has not published peer-reviewed research showing how accurate its AI is at spotting anatomical landmarks or clinical findings. That absence matters a great deal if the company wants doctors to trust the results or if it wants to make medical claims about what the scanner detects.

The Regulatory and Market Reality

Positioning the scanner as a wellness product rather than a medical diagnostic device is strategically deliberate. It likely lets Midjourney sidestep the FDA's formal clearance process — the 510(k) or PMA pathways — that apply to devices making clinical diagnostic claims. That is a rational business move. It is also risky.

When a scanner finds something — a mass, an enlarged organ, unexpected fluid — but cannot legally report it as a medical finding, you have a liability problem. A wellness product that causes worry without clinical authority to act on it doesn't solve that problem through framing alone.

The broader context matters here. Direct-to-consumer body scanning — companies like Prenuvo offering whole-body MRI outside the usual referral system — has drawn criticism from radiologists and FDA scrutiny over false alarms. These are incidental findings: things the scan detects that turn out to be harmless, but which trigger more tests, anxiety, and sometimes unnecessary treatment. Ultrasound's fuzzier pictures may actually reduce some of that noise compared to MRI's clarity, but it also limits what the scanner can credibly detect in the first place.

The underlying technology is genuinely interesting. A 60-second, radiation-free, AI-assisted full-body scan that costs less than an MRI and doesn't require a radiologist present during the acquisition is a different kind of product from anything in common use today. The real question is whether the AI's output is accurate enough and reliable enough to be useful, rather than just adding confusion.

Midjourney Medical has roughly 18 months until its target launch to prove the AI works clinically, work through FDA classification questions, and build out the operational model for spa-based scanning. That is a tight timeline. Whether the company uses the spa as a data-collection and learning phase before moving to medical settings, or treats it as the final destination, will determine if this becomes a real medical tool or a well-funded experiment.
