Fable returns in Autumn 2026 after a decade of work
After ten years of work, Playground Games will bring back Fable in Autumn 2026.
Director Ralph Fulton says many people inside Xbox see the series as vital to the DNA of the platform. That belief, he says, protected the project through its long development, as reported by Eurogamer.
The reboot was announced in 2020. Actual development reportedly started in 2016, which puts the effort at a decade by the time players return to Albion. Playground detailed that journey in a report on its 10-year effort to revive the series, published on 15 September 2026 by The Guardian.
Playground built its name on racing games such as Forza Horizon. Fable is a reboot, a fresh start for a much-loved franchise, and a change of genre for the studio. Its narrative lead left in 2023. The studio still lists open Fable roles including Principal Gameplay Engineer, Producer and Senior Cinematic Producer, a sign that work continues close to launch.
Playground said on 9 February 2026 that the game was coming in Autumn 2026. That is a production fact. No new date has replaced it.
Players return to Albion and become the Hero they want to be. This time they are the first Hero in a generation. It is a vibrant open-world, a large map free to explore at your own pace, with melee, ranged and magical combat to weave together. Targets include bandits, beasts and creatures.
The studio is promising a Living Population system of more than 1,000 NPCs, non-player characters controlled by the game, to fill towns, roads and wilds. Xbox detailed the system on 10 June 2026, describing a living Albion to explore, according to Xbox Wire. The cast leans into British comedy, with Richard Ayoade and Natasia Demetriou among those announced.
That long cycle played out while Xbox carried out layoffs and closed studios elsewhere. Fulton said the internal view of Fable shielded the team while other projects stopped. It is a frank admission on a beat where cuts are usually confirmed in company statements or filings.
Fable will be available with Game Pass, the subscription service that offers games for a monthly fee. It will also be the first Fable game to launch on PlayStation. Pre-orders are open, according to Xbox.
What makes this stand out is the combination of old and new. A series long tied to Xbox is now headed to rival hardware, made by a team best known for cars rather than quests, and led by a brand-new Hero in a familiar land.
