Claude Merges Chat, Cowork and Artifacts Into One Workspace
Anthropic is merging its Claude chat and Cowork front ends into one unified interface.
The new window puts chat, Cowork and Artifacts side by side. Artifacts, Claude's interactive workspace for showing work outside the chat transcript, stays in the same place. Claude now routes a request to the right mode itself, so users do not need to switch tabs or windows. TechCrunch
That routing covers new production-ready outputs. Users can ask Claude to create, edit and present slides inside the conversation. Finished presentations download as PDF or PowerPoint. A parallel Docs feature handles longer documents, where users can build sections, ask questions and leave comments on finished parts next to Claude. TechCrunch
The setup works across devices. A Claude-made document or slide can be shared by link and edited further on a phone. Work started on desktop can be watched from the mobile app while Claude continues the task.

The move builds on tools Claude users already have. Claude Design, introduced in April by Anthropic Labs for websites and prototypes, now works anywhere in Claude for polished visual output such as designs, prototypes, slides and one-pagers. Anthropic Projects act as folders with memory, each able to store uploaded documents, extra context and focused chats. Two recent integrations extend Claude into Office and Slack. The Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint add-ins, small helpers inside Office apps, can now share the full context of a conversation, according to September 15 release notes. The broader context here is a shift from choosing the mode to delegating it. Chatbots taught people to pick the tool first, then type a prompt. Cowork-style agents flipped that and asked permission to work with files and tools. With automatic routing in one surface, the user states intent in plain language. The system decides if that needs a short answer, a saved file, code execution or a longer background job. The test for experienced users will be predictability, whether that boundary stays clear, easy to interrupt and cheap to fix.
One tradeoff worth keeping in mind is how much background material must travel with the chat. Multiple attachments, project files, generated docs and slides, and Office chat context make a long session more useful. They also raise the cost when routing picks wrong or context runs over. Anthropic's rule that attachments must fit inside the context window remains the hard limit. Vendors that show clearly which files and threads shaped a doc or deck, and handle overflow cleanly, will earn more trust from technical teams than those that simply accept larger inputs.
In my view, the direction is familiar and sound. The PC era gathered separate utilities into suites. The cloud era gathered suites into shared canvases where people edit together. The current wave is gathering prompts, agents and finished files into workspaces where the file itself is the lasting object, not the chat log. I have watched my own children adopt these tools, and they rarely mention models or agents. They talk about whether the deck or doc was usable. If this unified Claude shortens the path from question to shareable work across desktop and phone, it improves the workflow it targets.
