Hibernian sack David Gray after poor start

Hibernian have sacked head coach David Gray after a poor start to the season.

Six games. Six points. Ninth place in the Scottish Premiership, Scotland's top division. The decision was announced after Tuesday's home defeat by bottom-of-the-table Kilmarnock, according to BBC Sport.

That loss was Hibernian's sixth in a row at home, a run stretching back to last season. Easter Road, the club's home ground in Edinburgh, has stopped being a fortress. It has become a worry.

Assistant coaches Liam Craig and Craig Samson have also left the club. First-team coach John Potter will take charge for Saturday's home game against Aberdeen.

The timing is brutal. The day before his departure, Gray had said he would keep trying to find solutions to Hibernian's poor form until told otherwise.

He had already been under pressure earlier this month. Hibernian lost 2-1 away to St Johnstone on 6 September, just days after an Edinburgh derby defeat on the preceding Thursday. Gray accepted the criticism after those back-to-back losses, saying he was well aware of the noise around the team, according to Sky Sports.

Europe offered no relief either. Hibernian exited the Conference League, UEFA's third-tier continental competition, after a late defeat by Belgian side Gent at Easter Road in late August, according to Sky Sports.
